How decks are made
Each deck is built in four steps. Nothing on this site is paid, and you never need an account.
1. The word list
Words are ranked by how often they appear in film and TV subtitles. Subtitles are close to how people really talk, so the words you will hear most come first. A small number of words covers a large share of everyday speech, which is why the first few hundred cards matter most.
2. Example sentences
Each word gets a short sentence from the Tatoeba project, a free collection of sentences and translations written by volunteers. Where Tatoeba has nothing simple enough, the sentence is written and checked by hand.
3. Audio
The word and the sentence are read aloud by an open text-to-speech model, at normal and slow speed. Every recording is then checked automatically by speech recognition, and redone if what it hears does not match the card.
4. Checking
The Polish deck is checked card by card by a native speaker, who also adds notes where a dictionary translation would mislead you. Other decks are checked automatically at first.
Found a mistake?
Every reported mistake is fixed in the next release of the deck. A report form is coming with the first deck.
License
Example sentences from Tatoeba are used under CC BY 2.0 FR, with credit to the authors. The decks themselves will be released under an open license that allows sharing; the exact license is confirmed once the audio voices are chosen, since each voice has its own terms.
