Telling Time in Polish

Ask Która jest godzina? and answer with a feminine ordinal: Jest piąta (It's five). "At five" is o piątej, and wpół do szóstej means 5:30, half way to six.

How to ask the time

The standard question is Która jest godzina?, literally "Which hour is it?". In everyday speech people often drop jest and just say Która godzina?. To ask when something happens, use O której? ("At which?"), short for O której godzinie?

PolishEnglishSay it
Która jest godzina? What time is it?KTOO-rah yest goh-JEE-nah
Która godzina?What time is it? (casual)KTOO-rah goh-JEE-nah

Czy wie pan, która jest godzina?Do you know what time it is? (polite, to a man)chih vyeh pahn, KTOO-rah yest goh-JEE-nah
Czy wie pani, która jest godzina?Do you know what time it is? (polite, to a woman)chih vyeh PAH-nee, KTOO-rah yest goh-JEE-nah
O której?At what time?oh KTOO-rey
O której zaczyna się film? What time does the film start?oh KTOO-rey zah-CHIH-nah sheh feelm

The answer starts with Jest ("It is") followed by the hour: Jest piąta. "It's five." You can also hear Dochodzi szósta ("It's nearly six") or Jest już po siódmej ("It's already past seven").

Full hours: pierwsza, druga, trzecia

Polish names the hour with an ordinal number. You don't say "five o'clock", you say "the fifth". The word godzina (hour) is feminine, so the ordinal takes the feminine ending -a: piąta, not piąty. The word godzina itself is usually left out.

Tip: Only the first four are irregular. From five on, the ordinal grows out of the ordinary number: pięć gives piąta, sześć gives szósta, dziesięć gives dziesiąta. If you already know the numbers, you can guess the rest.

"At five o'clock": o piątej

To say when something happens, use o plus the locative case. The ending -a changes to -ej, or -iej after g: druga becomes o drugiej. Two exceptions: "at midnight" is o północy and "at noon" is w południe.

  • Spotkajmy się o szóstej.
    Let's meet at six.
  • Kończę pracę o czwartej.
    I finish work at four.
  • Film zaczyna się o dziewiątej.
    The film starts at nine.

The same -ej form is used after od (from), do (until), około (around) and po (after): od ósmej do czwartej (from eight to four), około szóstej (around six), po siódmej (after seven). The odd one out is przed (before), which takes -ą: przed siódmą (before seven).

Half past: wpół do

This is the part that trips up English speakers. Polish counts the half hour towards the next hour. Wpół do trzeciej means "half to three", which is 2:30. The hour after wpół do has the same -ej ending you learned above.

PolishTimeSay it

wpół do piątej4:30fpoow doh PYON-tey
wpół do ósmej7:30fpoow doh OOS-mey
wpół do dziesiątej9:30fpoow doh jeh-SHON-tey

For "at half past", put o in front: Przyjdę o wpół do ósmej. "I'll come at half past seven."

Tip: To get it right, add one to the hour you mean. For 6:30, think "seven" and say wpół do siódmej.

Quarter past, quarter to and minutes

A quarter of an hour is kwadrans. For minutes past the hour, use po plus the -ej form: kwadrans po drugiej (2:15), dziesięć po trzeciej (3:10). For minutes to the hour, use za plus the plain hour: za kwadrans trzecia (2:45), literally "in a quarter, three". The word minut (minutes) is normally left out.

There is also a simpler "digital" way that Poles use all the time: the ordinal hour plus the minutes as an ordinary number. siódma piętnaście is 7:15, druga trzydzieści is 2:30, ósma zero pięć is 8:05. It works for any minute, like siódma dwadzieścia trzy (7:23). With o, only the hour changes: o siódmej piętnaście.

Tip: Za pięć dwunasta (five to twelve) is also an idiom meaning "at the last minute" or "the eleventh hour": Jest już za pięć dwunasta. "It's almost too late."

The 24-hour clock in timetables

Timetables, TV listings, opening hours, tickets and official announcements in Poland use the 24-hour clock. Times are written 17:30 or 17.30, often after godz., short for godzina. You read them with the ordinal hour and the minutes as a plain number: siedemnasta trzydzieści.

The pharmacy is open from 8:00 to 20:00.
  • Wiadomości są o dziewiętnastej.
The news is on at 7 pm.

In casual conversation most people switch back to the 12-hour clock and add the part of the day: o siódmej wieczorem rather than o dziewiętnastej.

Parts of the day

Polish has no "am" and "pm". Instead you add a word for the part of the day after the hour: o szóstej rano (6 am), o trzeciej po południu (3 pm), o drugiej w nocy (2 am).

Use wieczorem from about six in the evening, w nocy from about eleven until three or four, and nad ranem or rano after that.

  • Wstaję o szóstej rano.
I get up at six in the morning.
  • Zadzwoń do mnie po południu.
