Jobs in Polish
Most Polish job titles have a masculine and a feminine form: nauczyciel / nauczycielka (teacher), lekarz / lekarka (doctor). Say "Pracuję jako nauczyciel" (I work as a teacher) or "Jestem lekarzem" (I'm a doctor), with the job in the instrumental case after jestem.
Two ways to say what you do
Polish has two everyday patterns. The first is pracuję jako (I work as) followed by the job in its basic dictionary form, the nominative. The second is jestem (I am) followed by the job in the instrumental case, which usually means adding -em for a man or -ą for a woman.
- Pracuję jako nauczyciel.I work as a teacher. (man)
- Pracuję jako nauczycielka.I work as a teacher. (woman)
- Jestem lekarzem.I'm a doctor. (man)
- Jestem lekarką.I'm a doctor. (woman)
- Mój brat jest kucharzem. My brother is a cook.
Polish has no word for "a" or "the", so you never add one. Both patterns are correct and common. Pracuję jako is handy for beginners because you don't change the word at all.
Common jobs: masculine and feminine forms

A few trades are almost always used in the masculine, even for women, because the feminine is rare: kierowca (driver), mechanik (mechanic), elektryk (electrician), hydraulik (plumber). Kierowca ends in -a but is a masculine noun.
How the feminine forms are made
- Most add -ka: nauczyciel → nauczycielka, aktor → aktorka, kelner → kelnerka.
- Words ending in -k usually change to -czka: prawnik → prawniczka, rolnik → rolniczka.
- A few take -ica or -yni: uczeń → uczennica, sprzedawca → sprzedawczyni.
- Job titles that look like adjectives just change the ending: księgowy → księgowa.
Some newer feminine forms, such as architektka, inżynierka or psycholożka, are now common, especially among younger people. Others still sound unusual to many Poles, and some women prefer the masculine title for themselves: Jest inżynierem (She's an engineer). Both are correct. If you are not sure, use the form the person uses about herself.
Jestem lekarzem: the instrumental case
After jestem, jesteś, jest and the other forms of być (to be), a job goes into the instrumental case. The pattern is regular:
| Basic form | After jestem | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| lekarz | lekarzem | most masculine nouns: add -em |
| nauczyciel | nauczycielem | add -em |
| informatyk | informatykiem | after -k and -g: add -iem |
| kierowca | kierowcą | masculine nouns in -a: -a → -ą |
| lekarka | lekarką | feminine nouns: -a → -ą |
| sprzedawczyni | sprzedawczynią | -i → -ią |
| księgowy | księgowym | adjective type, man: -y → -ym |
| księgowa | księgową | adjective type, woman: -a → -ą |
- Ona jest dobrą lekarką.She is a good doctor.
- Mój tata jest kierowcą autobusu. My dad is a bus driver.
- Jesteśmy studentami.We are students.
- To jest Marek. Jest programistą.This is Marek. He's a programmer.
