Polish Future Tense
Polish forms the future in two ways: perfective verbs take present-tense endings (zrobię, I’ll do it), and imperfective verbs use będę plus the infinitive or past form (będę robić or będę robił, I’ll be doing).
Two ways to talk about the future
Polish verbs come in aspect pairs: an imperfective verb for a process or a repeated action (robić, to do) and a perfective verb for one finished result (zrobić, to get it done). The future is built differently for each.
- Perfective future: conjugate a perfective verb with present-tense endings. Zrobię means “I will do it, I’ll get it done”.
- Imperfective future: use the future of być (to be) plus the verb. Będę robić or będę robił means “I will be doing, I will do (regularly)”.
That is all. There is no separate “going to” form and no extra tenses. Which form you choose depends on whether you mean a finished result or an ongoing, repeated or unfinished action.
Być in the future: będę, będziesz, będzie
Start here, because być is both a verb on its own (“I will be”) and the helper for the imperfective future.
| Polish | English | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| (ja) będę | I will be | BEN-deh |
| (ty) będziesz | you will be | BEN-jesh |
| (on, ona, ono) będzie | he, she, it will be | BEN-jeh |
| (my) będziemy | we will be | ben-JEH-mih |
| (wy) będziecie | you all will be | ben-JEH-chyeh |
| (oni, one) będą | they will be | BEN-dohm |
- Jutro będę w domu.I’ll be at home tomorrow.
- Będziesz na imprezie? Will you be at the party?
- Będzie zimno. It will be cold.
- Jutro nie będzie mnie w pracy.I won’t be at work tomorrow.
The formal “you” uses the third person: Czy pan będzie jutro w biurze? (Will you be in the office tomorrow, sir?). In the negative, the person or thing that will not be there goes into the genitive: nie będzie mnie (I won’t be there), nie będzie czasu (there won’t be time).
Perfective future: zrobię, kupię, napiszę
A perfective verb has no real present tense. When you conjugate it with present-tense endings, the meaning is future. You already know the endings from the present tense, so there is nothing new to learn.
| Person | zrobić (to do) | napisać (to write) | kupić (to buy) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ja | zrobię | napiszę | kupię |
| ty | zrobisz | napiszesz | kupisz |
| on, ona, ono | zrobi | napisze | kupi |
| my | zrobimy | napiszemy | kupimy |
| wy | zrobicie | napiszecie | kupicie |
| oni, one | zrobią | napiszą | kupią |
Here are perfective futures you will hear every day. Some come from irregular verbs, so learn them as words.
| Polish | English | Say it |
|---|---|---|
| zrobię | I’ll do, I’ll make | ZROH-byeh |
| zadzwonię | I’ll call | zah-DZVOH-nyeh |
| napiszę | I’ll write | nah-PEE-sheh |
| kupię | I’ll buy | KOO-pyeh |
| zobaczę | I’ll see | zoh-BAH-cheh |
| powiem | I’ll tell, I’ll say | POH-vyem |
| dam | I’ll give | dahm |
| wezmę | I’ll take | VEZ-meh |
| zjem | I’ll eat | zyem |
| wypiję | I’ll drink | vih-PEE-yeh |
| pomogę | I’ll help | poh-MOH-geh |
| spróbuję | I’ll try | sproh-BOO-yeh |
| przyjdę | I’ll come (on foot) | PSHIY-deh |
| pójdę | I’ll go (on foot) | POOY-deh |
| pojadę | I’ll go (by vehicle) | poh-YAH-deh |
- Zadzwonię do ciebie wieczorem.I’ll call you this evening.
- Jutro kupię nowy telefon.Tomorrow I’ll buy a new phone.
- Zrobię to po pracy.I’ll do it after work.
- Zobaczymy.We’ll see.
- Nie powiem nikomu.I won’t tell anyone.
Imperfective future: będę robić or będę robił
For imperfective verbs, put the right form of będę in front of the main verb. The main verb can take one of two shapes, and both are correct standard Polish:
- będę + infinitive: będę robić, będziesz czytać. The infinitive never changes, so this is the easier option for learners.
- będę + past form: będę robił (a man), będę robiła (a woman). This past form shows gender and number, just like in the past tense.
| Person | With infinitive | With past form |
|---|---|---|
| ja | będę robić | będę robił / robiła |
| ty | będziesz robić | będziesz robił / robiła |
| on / ona / ono | będzie robić | będzie robił / robiła / robiło |
| my | będziemy robić | będziemy robili / robiły |
| wy | będziecie robić | będziecie robili / robiły |
| oni / one | będą robić | będą robili / robiły |
Use robili for a group with at least one man, and robiły for a group of women or of things. Note that the past form here has no person ending: you say będę robił, never będę robiłem.
- Co będziesz robić w weekend? What will you be doing at the weekend?
- Będę pracować do piątej.I’ll be working until five.
- Będziemy czekali na was. We’ll be waiting for you.
- Od jutra będę wstawać wcześniej. From tomorrow I’ll get up earlier.
- Będę o tobie myślała.I’ll be thinking of you. (a woman speaking)
Never put będę in front of a perfective verb. Będę zrobić is a typical learner mistake; say zrobię or będę robić.
Which future should you use?
Ask yourself whether you mean a finished result or the activity itself.
| Use | Perfective future | Imperfective future |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | one action, completed, with a result | a process, a duration, a habit, or just the activity |
| Write | Napiszę list. I’ll write the letter (and finish it). | Będę pisać list. I’ll be writing a letter. |
| Read | Przeczytam tę książkę w tydzień. I’ll read this book in a week. | Będę czytać wieczorem. I’ll read in the evening. |
| Call | Zadzwonię jutro. I’ll call tomorrow. | Będę dzwonić codziennie. I’ll call every day. |
| Buy | Kupię chleb. I’ll buy some bread. | Będę kupować chleb w tej piekarni. I’ll buy bread at this bakery (from now on). |
Words like codziennie (every day), często (often), zawsze (always) and długo (for a long time) usually point to the imperfective. Words like zaraz (in a moment), za chwilę (in a minute) and a single clear result point to the perfective.
Polish also uses the plain present tense for fixed plans, just as English does: Jutro jadę do Krakowa (Tomorrow I’m going to Kraków), W piątek mam egzamin (I have an exam on Friday).
Mieć + infinitive: plans and what you are supposed to do
Mieć means “to have”, but mieć + infinitive means “to be supposed to”. It is the everyday way to talk about plans, arrangements and instructions from someone else.
- Mam jutro iść do lekarza.I’m supposed to go to the doctor tomorrow.
- Mamy się spotkać o piątej. We’re supposed to meet at five.
- Co mam zrobić?What am I supposed to do?
- Jutro ma padać.It’s supposed to rain tomorrow.
- Miał przyjść o ósmej. He was supposed to come at eight.
For your own intentions, use zamierzać (to intend) or planować (to plan): Zamierzam kupić samochód (I’m going to buy a car). And the future of mieć itself is będę miał / będę miała: Jutro będę miał więcej czasu (I’ll have more time tomorrow).
